today I made Tom Ka Gai (sp?) for dinner. Easy and perfect for these cold SF nights. well, not too cold, but I imagine once winter rolls around it'll be one of those dishes I look forward to making. and eating.

still living out of boxes, and the only piece of furniture in my room is my bed, but yay, I'm moved in! this weekend has been exhausting, so i haven't really had a chance to go out around the city other than some walking/shopping today. however, once things settle down with work and i get all organized, things should get crazy fun.

anywho, first day of work tomorrow, better sleep.

whew
am super busy, but need a break and will post.

in the course of three or so days I got a job in San Francisco--the office on Union Square--and got a place there as well-- a flat right around the corner from mission dolores park. the landlord liked us and offered it to us pretty much on the spot, putting us ahead of everyone who went through formal applications and whatnot. oops! it's pretty much been bam bam bam hectic wheeling and dealing lately. also a graduation party and baptism thrown in the mix. lots of driving, which was not too fun; excited to be able to have everything within BART/Muni/bus/walking distance!

oh, and I got new glasses. they're green! (a very dark olive/greyish green)

more details later on all this craziness. now I am busy with packing and preparing for work.

haven't posted any drawings lately. my portfolio might be worth displaying, but that'd be a hassle. so instead here's yet another 3/4 view elf guy, who could possibly be Link, without his hat.

elf guy as usual )

ok, back to senior project

I was supposed to sleep early tonight. instead I've been up worrying about one of my houseplants, a bonsai in training of sorts. This is one of those posts that needs pictures, but I let a friend borrow my camera for a bit. Until then, just try to imagine a "ginseng ficus" (ex: http://www.kaizenbonsai.com/shop/images/ginseng_ib020.jpg and http://gardenbreizh.org/modules/pix/cache/photos/GBPIX_photo_14998.jpg) that has insanely fat and symmetrical roots that form a shape reminiscent of a turtle. it even has 6 very symmetrical trunks emerging from where a regular turtle would have it's shell (the roots form two fat legs and a little turtle head).

weird I know, but I call it my Turtle Tree (until a cooler name comes to mind). pretty damn rediculous looking. pictures up soon, I promise.

anywho, I've been trying to encourage aerial roots through daily spraying and wrapping the pot in a plastic bag, connected to a vessel of water. This all sits out next to my window-- the water heats up and adds to the humidity in the bag. I've got a ton of new aerial roots forming, but I think the large roots are getting a bit too sogged out-- there are some areas that seem to be blistering/rotting away.

ah, so frustrating. I'm gonna open up the bag for ventilation, cut back on the spraying a bit. The canopy looks fine and healthy, so I don't think it's a big issue. the rotted out bits (very little anyway) will dry and heal over in time.

I can't believe I just wrote this post about my Turtle Tree. None of you care about my weird plant stuff!

I keep imagining Turtle Tree relaxing in a bay window in our future place in SF. wherever that will be. All in all I have 5 smallish houseplants that I'll be bringing along. I'm also really excited about growing stuff outdoors-- I'm not counting on us having a yard, but I would at least like a doorstep planter box sorta deal. so much grows in the SF climate!

yea yea, plant nerd.

1. Have never been so stressed/busy. Just two more weeks...
2. Really hopeful about this job. things are sounding very good so far in speaking with the Vice President/Principal Owner... an office overlooking Union Square... fingers crossed
3. Sounds like we will move to SF around August... very excited
4. Pulled an all nighter last night, taking tonight off.
5. annoyed by my above overuse of ellipses, but too lazy to change it.
6. in the mood to play a video game or read a good book.

been waaaaaay busy, so now that I have time to catch my breath, here's a little recap.

-new stuff at work: offered a position in the fiscal and resource development "unit" at my internship at The City of Sacramento, accepted it of course. lots of fun and interesting work, though there was/is a lot of resentment from my old "unit" for me deciding to leave. blah blooh. had a meeting with one of the council members yesterday, and he remembered me from a couple months ago! little ol' intern me!

-new computer: got my first macbook pro a while back, had to send it back due to dead/stuck pixels, and the second/current one has a perfect screen. yay. nickname: Tomato Drew-Poo 2, official name pending but possibly Link. making a sleeve out of green fabric.

-new wacom table: yay! finally. Intuos3, 4x6. nickname: pickle, official name pending but possibly Navi.

-Mardi Gras: after a ton of silly drama/stress, looks like I'm going to New Orleans this February! fun birthday ahead.

-friendships/relationships: going well! things are happy.

-on the horizon (or actually already here): senior projects are here, and I'm still not sure what I'll be doing mine on! GRRRR. Renaissance Project (design competition between the interns at work) is coming up, so that's stressful too.

-hair: it's getting into my eyes, should probably cut it soon. haven't had it this long in years.

-you guys: happy holidays everyone!

Things are going very well overall, though lots of things are changing. Ended with CEC which was a little sad, but I'll keep in touch and they said I should come back if I'm looking for a job after graduation. This is unlikely, but it'll be nice to have options. The Sacramento internship continues to be lots of fun and good experience. Today a guy called me a twink during our lunch break, which was both funny and weird. I also think I may be in a tiny bit of trouble... but we'll see how it plays out.

I've continued a lot of my "planning ahead," focusing a lot on budgeting lately (since I've been advised not to waste my time with browsing for apartments/houses.) My car/insurance continues to eat up a lot of my income, but the payments are almost over and if I stick to my new spending plan I should still have a nice "start-up" savings built up by graduation time. I'm also weighing my options about buying a laptop and all. AutoCAD on a Mac... mmmm tempting.

I've been really tired lately, and can't seem to keep up with the cleaning (since I am doing TWO PEOPLE's worth, one of whom is a total slob). It's weird bc my parents were always super anal about cleanliness, so when I came to college and started living with Kyle I guess I sort of welcomed the change. But nope, not anymore. Now it's my turn to be super anal--.... about cleaning that is, um, yea.

Friendships have definitely changed. It's funny that during this time of trying to become more fully independent/self-sufficient I somehow allowed myself to completely open up to someone and turn to him for help/support with the rough stuff. But I think it's one of the best things I've done in quite a while. And it's mutual, which is definitely good.

here's to looking forward.

oh crap, what am I doing after graduation? Lately I've been on this weird, year-early apartment/house-hunting frenzy in a couple cities I'd like to live in... but maybe it's good to at least check out prices and be planning so far ahead? I also need to start looking for firms in said cities.

blagh

I've decided to end my internship with CEC by the end of the month. I'm a little sad about it-- I've grown attached to my boss for some reason. She reminds me of Martha Stewart/Meryl Streep/that cool aunt everyone has. So August 31st is my last day. This'll give me enough time to finish my projects there before making the switch to 40 hours at Sacramento. Apparently, I'm about to be swamped with work there-- in addition to my own projects, I have to finish up the work of the graduated senior student interns who just left. That's a buttload of stuff. Being the only student intern in an office accustomed to having four...intimidating. Anyway, it'll be fun.

it's official: I like my Sacramento internship way more than the Davis one. More responsibility, more fun people, nicer setting (downtown Sac as opposed to random Davis business park), etc. And, come next week my workspace will triple, making it much bigger than the Davis one. So yay.

After work today I went straight to the oh so evil walmart-- I bought an iron so I can finally iron my clothes without using the one in Vacaville (funny how we have an ironing board in our house but have never had an iron) and a file box / hanging file folders so I can finally tackle that jungle of papers inside my armoire. It took me forever to decide on which iron to buy-- I can't believe I almost spend 50 bucks on one. sheesh. I settled for a more basic model, after all do I really need advanced steam options?

You may think I'm lame, but I'm actually looking forward to this! But don't worry, I'm sure I'll go out tonight.

Maybe I'm back on livejournal...?

random update on my goings-on...

-summer internships. landed two--one at Cunningham Engineering Corp here in Davis and the other for the Sacramento Parks/Rec Planning Dept thing. Both are paid Landscape Architecture internships which is pretty nice. On top of that, I can get units for my work. I finally start at Sac next wednesday (thanks to their lenghthy paperwork process); so far it's just been CEC which has been a good experience so far. my boss reminds me of Meryl Streep. we had a company picnic today and I got to know some of my coworkers a little better. Sac will be fun as well, and I think I might prefer the atmosphere there (though I will be stuck in a cubicle unlike my relatively big open office at CEC). With identical salaries, but drastically different commutes, it'll be interesting come fall when I have to make a decision about which one to keep into the school year.

-feeling old or something. what is this responsibility thing? not that I was irresponsible before, but I am way more on top of things in a weird way. at the same time, 8 to 5 everyday is going to take some getting used to.

-pets. The neighborhood cat seems to have taken a liking to me, and figured out how to open my screen door (keep my sliding door open at night for the heat)and allows himself in whenever he wants. I call him Mr. Cat.

-post graduation. so far my plan is to work at a firm for a year to build my portfolio and gain experience. then off to grad school. where, not sure yet. berkeley, new york, and a couple schools in germany are all in the cards. maybe I can get a firm to pay/help with education expenses. or, if I end up in deutschland some of the programs are tuition free-- can't complain about that.

-health. considering buying a session II membership to the ARC. serious lack of exercise, although our weekly football games help. had a seriously bad stomach flu around last week, and my stomach is still weak. my boss suggests buying "digestive enzymes." sounds like a plan, but I'm also afraid of my stomach growing dependent on them or something. I want it to rebuild on its own.

-weather. the heat wave seems to be finally over.

-people. missing some, getting closer to others

-overall. things are good.
